President John Dramani Mahama on Monday joined fellow African heads of state and government at a high-level meeting of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
The gathering, themed “Securing Africa’s Health Sovereignty: Political Leadership for Sustainable Health Financing, Local Manufacturing, and Pandemic Preparedness,” brought together leaders to discuss strategies for strengthening the continent’s health systems.
Addressing the meeting, President Mahama stressed the central role of health in Africa’s development agenda.
“Health is not a cost. It is the engine of productivity and the foundation of sovereignty,” he said, urging greater investment in sustainable health financing and local manufacturing of medical supplies.
President Mahama is also scheduled to host a side event on Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. Ghana time, under the banner “The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development.”
The event will explore reforms to international health governance and how global institutions can better support equitable development.
The UN General Assembly’s 80th session officially opens on Tuesday with the start of the General Debate, where world leaders are expected to address pressing issues including health security, climate change, and geopolitical tensions.
