Former President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians of his commitment to addressing the country’s growing insecurity, particularly the rising threat of armed robbery, should he be elected president in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a community engagement in Nalerigu, in the Upper East region, Former President Mahama, emphasized the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) readiness to restore safety and security across the nation.
Mr. Mahama noted that the current government has failed to adequately equip security forces to combat crime, leaving citizens vulnerable to criminal activities.
He said, the NDC’s track record in security management and promised that his government would prioritize the resourcing of the Ghana Police Service with the necessary tools to curb the menace of armed robbery.
“I know that armed robbers are disturbing you. The NDC is the party that knows how to deal with armed robbery,” Mahama stated. “When we come, we’re going to equip the police, give them vehicles, and provide them with everything they need to combat these criminals.”
He went on to serve a warning to armed robbers, saying their days are numbered under an NDC administration. Mahama vowed to make Ghana a safe place again, ensuring that citizens, especially women and traders, can go about their daily activities without fear.
“Our mothers should be able to go to the market and return without worrying that they will be ambushed by robbers, their phones and money stolen. We will ensure the police are well-equipped to protect them,” he assured the crowd.
In addition to tackling security challenges, Mahama reiterated his decision to run for president again, citing the deteriorating state of the economy and the country’s overall mismanagement under the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Our nation is in crisis. The country I handed over to the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration has not been taken to the next level as expected. Instead, our economy is in shambles, and we are facing a debt crisis,” he said.
Mahama expressed concern over the resurgence of the energy crisis, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” which he noted is returning, with frequent power outages disrupting daily life.
“Destiny calls that I should once again offer myself to the people of Ghana. With the experience I have, we can lift Ghana and put her back on her feet,” Mahama concluded.
The former president’s comments come at a time when Ghana is grappling with economic instability and growing insecurity, with citizens calling for stronger leadership to address the challenges.
The NDC’s flagbearer John Mahama’s campaign message promises a renewed focus on security, economic recovery, and improved governance ahead of the 2024 elections.
