Former Special Prosecutor Martin A. B. K. Amidu has thrown his support behind former President John Dramani Mahama, describing him as the best candidate to address the challenges Ghana faces after the Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia administration.
In a statement dated December 3, 2024, Amidu said the NDC’s flag bearer is experienced as a former president, asserting that his leadership is crucial to auditing what he described as the “mess” left by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
“John Dramani Mahama is not a saint, but he is nobody’s poodle. He has the experience as a former President to audit the mess the Nana Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government will leave behind,” Amidu wrote.
Acknowledging his past disagreements with Mahama, which he has documented on his personal website, Amidu noted that the current political situation requires a pragmatic approach to ensure accountability.
He argued that Mahama is uniquely positioned to uphold the integrity of the 1992 Constitution and conduct a comprehensive review of the outgoing government’s performance.
“The constitutional situation on our hands, however, demands pragmatism to ensure probity and accountability after an eight-year tenure of government. We need a candidate who can command a sizeable parliamentary representation to actualize an audit of the previous government,” Amidu stated.
Mr. Amidu also pointed to fears within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) about Mahama’s potential scrutiny of their tenure.
“John Dramani Mahama, whose audit Nana Akufo-Addo fears, ought to be the best bet for the integrity of the 1992 Constitution in our present circumstances,” he added.
The former Special Prosecutor criticized what he described as dynastic politics and cronyism, urging Ghanaians to vote for change in the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024.
“The 1992 Constitution does not enshrine dynasty or inheritance by cronyism; that is why the electorate should aim for a change in government on 7 December 2024 to defend and preserve the Constitution of our Fourth Republic,” he said, underscoring that Ghana’s national interest must take precedence.
Former Special Prosecutor’s endorsement is likely to add a significant dimension to the 2024 electoral landscape, as Mahama campaigns to reclaim the presidency amidst calls for improved governance and accountability.
