MTN Ghana has invested more than $1.1 billion over three years and is deploying 500 new network sites nationwide as it seeks to improve service quality and extend connectivity to more communities.

The investment forms part of the telecommunications company’s efforts to strengthen network capacity and infrastructure resilience amid growing demand for its services, according to its Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, Joseph Dogbe.

Speaking at MTN Ghana’s media and stakeholder forum in Wa, Mr Dogbe said the company now connected 32 million subscribers across the country after three decades of operations.

He said the company’s anniversary was not only an opportunity to celebrate its achievements but also to reflect on its shortcomings and renew its commitment to improving services.

“This year, we are investing approximately $380 million,” he said, adding that the broader investment of more than $1.1 billion covered a three-year period.

The investment, he explained, was intended to enhance network capacity, improve service quality and strengthen the resilience of infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing customer base.

The deployment of 500 new sites nationwide, he added, would help extend coverage and improve network performance.

Mr Dogbe said the company’s growth over the past 30 years reflected the transformation of mobile telecommunications in Ghana, where access to mobile phones and reliable connectivity had evolved from a luxury into an essential part of everyday life.

“Today, MTN Ghana connects 32 million subscribers across the country and continues to play a significant role in Ghana’s digital transformation,” he said.

From mobile luxury to digital necessity

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Mr Dogbe said mobile connectivity had created opportunities that would have been difficult to imagine when MTN Ghana began operations three decades ago.

He cited the ability of a farmer in the Upper West Region to transfer money, access information and connect with a buyer in Accra using a mobile device as an example of how telecommunications had changed economic activity.

He said the company’s mission to connect people had evolved alongside Ghana’s digital transformation, with mobile services increasingly supporting businesses, financial transactions and access to information.

However, he acknowledged that MTN’s journey had not been without challenges.

“There were years when our network did not reach as far as we intended it to. When our services fell short of what communities expected,” he said.

Mr Dogbe said the company was grateful for the lessons learned from those shortcomings and for the patience customers had shown as it worked to improve its services.

He stressed that the anniversary should encourage honest reflection on both the company’s achievements and areas requiring further improvement.

GH¢5.6bn in taxes paid in first half of 2026

Beyond its telecommunications services, Mr Dogbe said MTN Ghana continued to contribute to national development through taxes, levies, fees and employment.

He disclosed that the company paid GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes during the first half of 2026, alongside another GH¢385 million in fees and levies.

He also highlighted the importance of employment and opportunities created through the company’s operations and investments in communities.

For him, the significance of MTN’s growth extended beyond subscriber numbers and financial performance to the impact of its services on people’s livelihoods.

“When we share these numbers, they are important. But for me, it’s not so important as the lives that we touch and the opportunities that we create within the communities,” he said.

He added that connectivity alone was insufficient to achieve meaningful transformation unless people could use technology to improve their lives.

Digital inclusion, cybersecurity take centre stage

Mr Dogbe said MTN Ghana remained committed to digital inclusion, emphasising that expanding network access must be accompanied by efforts to ensure people could benefit meaningfully from technology.

He also identified cybersecurity and data privacy as critical to maintaining customer confidence, pledging continued efforts to strengthen the company’s systems and governance.

“Cybersecurity and data privacy are not technical issues confined to server rooms and policy documents. They are fundamental to the trust customers place in us,” he said.

He maintained that building and maintaining customer trust remained central to the company’s operations as digital services continued to expand.

MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary is being marked under the theme, “MTN Ghana @30: Connecting Ghana, Shaping the Digital Future.”

Mr Dogbe said the company intended to build on its achievements while working with stakeholders to address service challenges and ensure that the benefits of digital connectivity reached more communities across Ghana.
