The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued an urgent warning to communities along the Black Volta and other downstream areas to evacuate immediately as authorities in Burkina Faso prepare to spill excess water from the Bagre Dam on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
The announcement follows an update from SONABEL, the Burkinabe power authority, which indicated a significant rise in water levels at both the Bagre and Kompienga dams.
As of Friday, August 22, the Kompienga Dam recorded an upstream elevation of 177.66 metres, a filling rate of 77.26 percent, and a reservoir level 2.34 metres below the maximum.
The Bagre Dam recorded an upstream elevation of 233.98 metres, a filling rate of 86.38 percent, and a reservoir level just 1.02 metres below its normal capacity.
According to NADMO, the controlled spillage, which has become an annual occurrence, often results in widespread flooding in Ghana’s northern regions. Affected communities frequently suffer the destruction of farmlands and property, displacement of residents, as well as incidents of snakebites and fatalities.
“NADMO North East Region is therefore warning the public and settlers along the Bagre Dam to evacuate with immediate effect before the spillage starts,” the organisation said in a statement issued on Saturday.
NADMO assured that it is working closely with SONABEL and other stakeholders to monitor the situation and provide regular updates. The organisation has also urged the public to rely only on official communication channels for accurate information.
Residents seeking assistance or further details can contact NADMO through its North East Regional Office on +233 244 521 812 or +233 249 760 953, or via email at [email protected].
