The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on Ghanaians to unite in sober reflection following a national tragedy that claimed the lives of several citizens, including two serving ministers of state.
Speaking at the Jubilee House gardens during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony marking the second day of a three-day national mourning, Dr Opoku Prempeh described the moment as a call for national unity and a renewed dedication to building a stronger Ghana.
He urged politicians to prioritise initiatives that genuinely improve the lives of ordinary citizens, noting that “the ultimate measure of leadership is service to the people.”
Honouring the Fallen
Paying tribute to the deceased, Dr Opoku Prempeh remembered the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, as both a junior colleague in medicine and a trusted friend and brother.
He also recalled his close friendship with the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, with whom he shared frequent political discussions and a shared vision for Ghana.
Reflecting on his 25-year bond with the late Dr Samuel Sarpong, he recounted attending every Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly meeting to which Members of Parliament were invited under Dr Sarpong’s leadership describing their relationship as deeply personal and enduring.
While acknowledging the nation’s collective grief, Dr Opoku Prempeh reminded the public that the pain for bereaved families will remain long after the ceremonies have ended.
He appealed for ongoing compassion, love, and tangible support to the families in the months and years ahead.
“This is a time for sober reflection,” he said. “A time to stand together, comfort the grieving, and recommit ourselves to building the Ghana our fallen brothers and sisters dreamed of.”
