Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on nursing students from various institutions in Accra to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections.
Dr. Prempeh, affectionately known as “Napo,” addressed students from the Korle-Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), the Accra School of Hygiene, and the Public Health Nursing School on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
He emphasized the NPP government’s achievements in the health sector and outlined Bawumia’s vision for the future.
Speaking at the event in the Ablekuma South Constituency, Dr. Prempeh, who previously served as Ghana’s Education and Energy Minister, highlighted key accomplishments of the NPP government, notably the restoration of nursing trainee allowances, which had been cancelled by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
“As you yourselves have always said, a delayed Allawa [allowance] is much better than a cancelled one. We have restored your Allawa and are working on fixing the delays,” Dr. Prempeh stated.
He contrasted this with the stance of former President John Mahama, accusing him of dismissing students’ legitimate demands by refusing to reinstate the allowance. “Is that how a leader should speak to his people?” he asked.
Dr. Prempeh further pointed to the NPP’s flagship Agenda 111 initiative, which aims to construct over 100 hospitals across Ghana. He assured the nursing students that these facilities, many of which are nearing completion, will provide employment opportunities for them upon graduation.
“When John Mahama cancelled your Allawa, his excuse was that he was going to use those funds to build hospitals. But where are the hospitals? In contrast, we in the NPP have shown it is possible to pay your Allawa and still build over 100 hospitals, which will provide you with jobs,” Dr. Prempeh stated. He added that the NPP had abolished the NDC’s unpopular “three months’ pay for three years of work” policy and ensured that healthcare services remained functional.
He urged the students to reward the NPP’s efforts in the health sector by voting for Dr. Bawumia and all NPP Parliamentary candidates in their respective constituencies, to safeguard the party’s achievements and secure their future.
