Election 2024: Small-Scale Miners Association reject NPP, endorse Mahama for Presidency

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana (NCSSMAG) has officially declared its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 7th December 2024 general elections.

This endorsement, announced during a nationwide mining conference in the Ashanti Region, comes after thorough deliberations and consultations among members of the Association.

According to the NCSSMAG, the NDC’s mining policies, as outlined in their manifesto, present the best opportunity to address the pressing challenges faced by small-scale miners in Ghana.

Reasons for the Endorsement

The Association cited three primary reasons for supporting the NDC over the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP):

Credible and Detailed Policies

  1. The NDC’s manifesto has been lauded for its comprehensive approach to small-scale mining. Among the highlights are:
    • Reorganization of Small-Scale Mining: A nationwide restructuring aimed at ensuring transparency and sustainability in the sector.
    • National Small-Scale Mining Support Fund: This initiative promises financial aid, technical assistance, and capacity-building programs to enhance the productivity and welfare of miners.
    • Environmental Standards: The NDC intends to strictly enforce environmental protection measures while shielding legitimate miners from arbitrary sanctions.
    • Regulatory Oversight: The creation of a Small-Scale Mining Regulatory Council to streamline licensing and ensure fairness.

Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of the NCSSMAG, expressed confidence in the NDC’s understanding of the sector’s challenges and its ability to implement practical solutions.

  1. Disillusionment with the NPP
The Association criticized the NPP’s approach to small-scale mining, describing it as inconsistent and superficial. They cited Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent promise to make small-scale miners “billionaires” as a hollow statement that does not reflect the current realities of the sector.
  2. Track Record of Neglect
Since 2017, the NPP administration has faced widespread criticism from miners, with allegations of politically connected individuals engaging in illegal mining while legitimate miners were denied access to licensed concessions. Arbitrary crackdowns have further deepened frustrations within the industry, eroding trust in the government’s commitment to fair practices.

NDC’s Vision for the Mining Sector

The NDC has outlined a vision of economic growth and environmental sustainability for Ghana’s mining industry. Its manifesto prioritizes:

  • Transparent frameworks for concession allocation.
  • Formalization of artisanal mining to maximize revenue and create jobs.
  • Collaborative efforts with traditional authorities to curb illegal mining activities.
  • Rehabilitation of degraded lands to promote ecological restoration.

These policies aim to foster a thriving small-scale mining sector that contributes significantly to Ghana’s economic development while preserving environmental integrity.

Call to Action

The NCSSMAG has urged miners and their families to vote for the NDC in the upcoming elections. “This is not just about politics; it’s about protecting the future of small-scale mining in Ghana,” said Peprah.

The Association expressed optimism that the NDC’s policies would revive the sector, create employment opportunities, and establish sustainable practices for the benefit of mining communities nationwide.

Political Implications

Analysts predict that the endorsement could boost the NDC’s electoral chances, particularly in mining regions where small-scale mining serves as a critical economic activity. This move highlights the growing dissatisfaction among miners with the NPP’s handling of the sector, potentially shifting voter allegiance in key constituencies.

As Ghana heads toward the December elections, the engagement of political parties with industry stakeholders like the NCSSMAG may play a decisive role in shaping the outcome.
