The Ashanti regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to address unresolved issues from the Special Voting Exercise ahead of the December 7 general elections.
Among the concerns raised is the alleged use of easily cleanable indelible ink, which the party claims could undermine the credibility of the polls.
The NDC expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of certain electoral officers during the special voting and emphasized the need for transparency and fairness on Election Day. They called on the EC to ensure all identified issues are resolved to guarantee the integrity of the process.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kumasi on Thursday, November 5, 2024, the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Abbas Nurudeen, urged party supporters to stay vigilant and implored security agencies to safeguard the sanctity of the elections.
“Our ears and eyes are on the ground, and we are monitoring every move of some officials of the EC and their collaborators,” he said. “We call on all our teeming supporters in the Ashanti Region, sympathizers, and everyone yearning for change to come out in their numbers and vote massively for H.E. John Dramani Mahama and all NDC parliamentary candidates.”
Addressing the issue of the indelible ink, Nurudeen noted discrepancies observed during the special voting exercise. “We realized that some of the indelible ink used by the EC is easily cleanable. This creates an avenue for multiple voting and impersonation,” he said.
According to Nurudeen, the party has received assurances from the regional EC office that the problematic ink has been replaced. However, he maintained that the NDC would closely monitor the situation to ensure compliance on Election Day.
“We sincerely hope that the assurances given to us are true on D-Day. We will not tolerate the use of cleanable indelible ink under any circumstances,” he stressed.
The NDC has called on its supporters nationwide to remain resolute and committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
