The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has assured the Ghanaian public that no Coca-Cola products from Belgium, which were recently recalled over safety concerns, have been registered or officially imported into the country.
The reassurance follows reports that Coca-Cola Belgium had recalled certain products across Europe due to high levels of chlorate, a chemical that can pose health risks when consumed in excessive amounts.
According to the recall notice, the impacted products include; Coca-Cola (bottled and canned) Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, Minute Maid, Appletiser (canned), Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Sprite Zero.
The affected products bear production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE, which can be found at the base of the cans. The recall period covers products manufactured between November 23 and December 3, 2024.
In its statement, the FDA clarified that none of these products have been officially imported into Ghana, and its market surveillance has not detected their presence. The Authority further emphasized that no Coca-Cola products from Belgium had been cleared through Ghana’s points of entry since November 2023.
For consumer clarity, the FDA outlined the only imported Coca-Cola products officially registered in Ghana, which come from Algeria, Liberia, South Africa, Tunisia, Nigeria, the UK, USA, and Canada. Additionally, locally manufactured Coca-Cola products in Ghana include; Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Lime-Lemon.
The FDA assured consumers that all Coca-Cola products available in Ghana adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards and have been rigorously tested and registered before reaching the market.
The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and market surveillance in collaboration with other agencies to prevent the circulation of unapproved or unsafe products.
The public is urged to report any suspected Coca-Cola products from Belgium found on the Ghanaian market to the nearest FDA office.
