The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly rejected demands for a GH₵50 million surety for the release of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking to the media at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, stated unequivocally that the NPP will not provide the surety amount either today or in the future.
“We will not offer a 50 million cedis surety today or tomorrow,” Kodua declared during the protest organized by party supporters demanding the immediate release of Chairman Wontumi.
The protest follows Wontumi’s recent detention by EOCO under circumstances that the party describes as politically motivated and unjust.
Supporters gathered in significant numbers at EOCO headquarters to express their disapproval and call for his release.
Kodua emphasized that the NPP stands in solidarity with its regional chairman and views the conditions surrounding his detention as excessive and unacceptable.
“We believe in the rule of law and due process, but we will not allow any form of intimidation or political persecution against our members,” he added.
As of press time, EOCO had not issued an official statement on the case or the rationale behind the GH₵50 million surety condition.
