The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a series of interventions aimed at improving the reliability and quality of electricity supply across the country.
In a statement, the minister acknowledged recent power outages in key urban centres, including Accra and Kumasi, noting that the disruptions have caused significant inconvenience to households, businesses, and institutions.
He attributed the challenges to years of underinvestment in the electricity distribution network, citing poor planning, inadequate infrastructure investment, procurement inefficiencies, and limited maintenance of critical systems.
To address the situation, the government has initiated a comprehensive programme to upgrade the country’s power distribution infrastructure. This includes the replacement of ageing transformers, expansion of substation capacity, and rehabilitation of overloaded feeders in high-demand areas.
As part of immediate measures, the government is undertaking the emergency procurement of 2,500 transformers to boost capacity and stabilize supply. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is also upgrading key substations in areas such as Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi in Accra.
In Kumasi and surrounding communities, similar efforts are underway, including network reinforcement projects and expansion of distribution lines to improve service delivery and support growing industrial and commercial activities.
The minister said the interventions form part of a broader strategy to modernize the national grid, reduce technical losses, improve voltage stability, and enhance fault detection and response times.
He added that steps are being taken to improve operational efficiency and accountability within ECG, alongside efforts to strengthen communication with customers regarding outages and maintenance schedules.
Dr. Jinapor emphasized that the measures are part of a long-term plan to build a resilient and efficient electricity distribution system capable of supporting Ghana’s economic transformation, including its 24-hour economy agenda.
He appealed to the public to remain patient as the upgrades are carried out, assuring that the government remains committed to delivering reliable, affordable, and quality electricity to all Ghanaians.
