Coastal communities in the Western Region are expected to play a central role in the success of Ghana’s newly declared Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Greater Cape Three Points zone, as government shifts focus toward sustainable fisheries and long-term livelihoods.
The initiative, announced by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, covers a critical ecological stretch linking more than 21 communities across Ahanta West and Nzema East. Authorities say the move is part of a broader strategy to restore depleted marine resources while safeguarding the economic future of fishing-dependent populations.
Government officials have been quick to assure fisherfolk that the policy is not intended to restrict fishing activities, but rather to introduce sustainable practices that will allow fish stocks to recover and ensure continued productivity in the sector.
To support implementation, an MPA Management Executive Committee has been established to oversee operations, enforce regulations, and ensure effective governance of the protected area.
The Vice President emphasized that the success of the initiative will depend largely on collaboration between government agencies, local communities, and development partners, including Hɛn Mpoano. She called for compliance and shared responsibility to ensure the long-term viability of the project.
In addition to conservation efforts, government has pledged targeted interventions to support affected communities. These include alternative livelihood programs, infrastructure development, and inclusive policies designed to cushion any short-term economic impact while promoting sustainable growth.
The declaration, backed by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146) and approved by Cabinet, signals a shift toward a more community-centered approach in managing marine resources under Ghana’s blue economy agenda.
Officials believe that if successfully implemented, the initiative could serve as a model for balancing environmental protection with economic sustainability in coastal regions.
