The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has responded to a recent statement by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, clarifying his remarks and denying claims that he opposed the party.

In a detailed response, Antwi-Boasiako emphasized that at no point did he involve the NPP National Council in his public engagements.
He wrote, “The National Council of the NPP never featured in any of the statements I made to the people.
“Throughout my engagement with people, I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online,” he added.
He stated that his comments focused on the party’s history and strategy to regain power in the 2028 elections with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the flagbearer.
Antwi-Boasiako recalled the party’s internal processes in the 1990s, noting that in 1995, only regional chairmen and executives were mandated to vote in primaries. After the 1996 primaries, the NPP had just six months to campaign ahead of national elections, with then-flagbearer John Agyekum Kufuor securing 39%. In 1998, Kufuor was re-elected by party delegates with two years to campaign before the 2000 election, where he sought an additional 11% to surpass the 50% threshold, competing against Atta Mills, who was aiming for a majority.
Antwi-Boasiako compared this to the current scenario, suggesting that Dr. Bawumia requires a 9% increase for the NPP to win in 2028.
He defended his role as Ashanti Regional Chairman, saying it brought him closer to grassroots opinions about the party’s direction and that his engagements reflected these views, without mentioning the National Council.

He criticized Mr. Kodua Frimpong for what he described as a misleading statement that misrepresented his comments.
“It is unfortunate Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong has fallen for a propaganda seeking to misconstrue my statement.”
Antwi-Boasiako called the approach unjust and suggested that better communication between the two could have prevented misunderstandings, especially in an era where misinformation can be easily amplified by digital tools such as artificial intelligence.
“There is no justice in the way he has gone about the matter.
In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Mr. Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding of my statements before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” Wontumi concluded.
Background:
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Leadership in a statement signed by Justin Frimpong Kodua, General secretary of the party asked the public and party stakeholders to disregard recent statements made by the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, and Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, saying their remarks do not reflect the party’s values or practices.
The party emphasized that claims by Mr. Antwi Boasiako suggesting that the decision to hold the presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, was designed to favor a specific aspirant. The NPP described this claim as unfounded and stressed that the National Council made the decision after thorough deliberation in the party’s supreme strategic interest.
According to the party, the National Council’s composition ensures no individual can manipulate decisions for personal gain. The early timetable for the congress aims to give the NPP sufficient time to reorganize, reposition, and prepare effectively to regain power in the 2028 general elections.
Earlier on, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, while speaking to party delegates, alleged that the party is scheming to rig the presidential election to favor Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to him, the plan is to ensure that all current executives are maintained and vote for Bawumia.
He said this strategy was repeated in 1998 to favor John Agyekum Kufuor.
He also claimed that expanding the delegates’ album to include polling station executives and former executives was a move to support Dr. Bawumia’s bid to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 election.
He urged the delegates to vote for Bawumia.
