The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has cautioned road users to take extra precautions as heavy rains continue to cause flooding, poor visibility and dangerous road conditions in parts of the country.
The Authority said recent downpours have submerged major roads in parts of the capital and other areas, creating risks for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
According to the NRSA, the rainy season often brings challenges such as damaged road surfaces, overflowing drains, reduced visibility and debris on roads, which can make some routes unsafe or completely inaccessible.
The Authority has therefore urged drivers and all road users to remain vigilant, follow road safety regulations and take necessary precautions to prevent crashes and related fatalities during the period.
The NRSA advised drivers and vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, with particular attention to essential safety components such as windscreen wipers, tyres, mirrors and lighting systems.
Motorists have also been warned against driving through flooded roads or standing water, as the depth of water may be difficult to determine from inside a vehicle. The Authority noted that shallow floodwaters can still cause vehicles to lose control, stall or suffer damage, while moving water can sweep vehicles off the road.
The NRSA encouraged drivers who encounter flooded sections of roads to turn around and find alternative routes, stressing that no journey is worth risking lives or property.
Pedestrians have also been advised to stay alert, remain visible while walking along roads and avoid distractions such as using mobile phones or headphones near traffic. They should ensure that vehicles have stopped completely before attempting to cross roads.
Passengers, the Authority added, have a role to play in promoting road safety by speaking up against reckless driving behaviour that could put their lives and those of other road users at risk.
The NRSA emphasized that collective responsibility, caution and strict adherence to safety measures are key to reducing road crashes during the rainy season.
