On Thursday 26th June 2025, A display of ancient Asante spiritual tradition took center stage on at the Manhyia Palace, as the revered Nsumankwaafie, led by Otumfuo Nsumankwaahene Baffour Asabre Kogyawoasu Ababio III, were once again credited with holding back the rain during a high-profile royal durbar.
The durbar, held at Dwabrem in honour of the visiting King of Eswatini, proceeded without disruption despite heavy downpours in surrounding parts of Kumasi including immediate surroundings of Manhyia Palace.
The dry conditions at the palace grounds were widely attributed to the spiritual intervention of the Nsumankwaafie, commonly referred to as Adurofuo (spiritual oracles).
In Asante tradition, the Nsumankwaafie are believed to wield supernatural powers, particularly the ability to prevent rainfall during major outdoor events graced by the Asantehene.
Their perceived success during Thursday’s ceremony reaffirmed their status as spiritual custodians within the royal court.
Central to this belief is the role of the Nsumankwaahene, who is regarded as the spiritual pillar behind the Asantehene. Before the King of Asante sits at any official function, the Nsumankwaahene performs purification rites using the sacred Asamanka to cleanse the space, neutralize malevolent forces, and spiritually prepare the ground for Otumfuo’s presence.
Thursday’s event offered a striking reminder of the enduring power of Asante customs and the deep reverence for spiritual guardianship in the Kingdom.
