Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, the Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, has been re-elected as President of the National House of Chiefs following a closely contested election held in Kumasi on Friday, November 22.
Gyebi secured 42 votes to defeat his main rival, Oseadeayo Agyemang Badu II, the Dormaahene, who garnered 30 votes. One ballot was rejected during the voting process.
In the election for the Vice President position, Buipewura Abdullai Jinapor II retained his seat with 54 votes. The remaining votes were shared among three other contenders.
Legal and Procedural Standoff
The election process faced early challenges when a Deputy Registrar informed the House that two lawsuits had been filed, seeking to restrain the election from proceeding.
Additionally, a standoff erupted as some members demanded that the House be formally constituted and its members sworn in before voting commenced.
Following prolonged deliberations, the members resolved the impasse by voting on whether the election should proceed. A secret ballot was conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission (EC), with 48 members voting in favor of continuing and 24 opposing.
Security and Voting Process
The election, conducted via secret ballot, was held under heightened security to ensure a smooth process.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II’s re-election solidifies his leadership of the National House of Chiefs at a time when traditional authority continues to play a vital role in Ghana’s governance and socio-economic development.
