The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused Organised Labour of attempting to destabilize the government, claiming their recent actions are aligned with a leaked National Democratic Congress (NDC) strategy document for the 2024 elections.
In a statement, NPP National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha highlighted that the document, titled “Winning 2024 and Beyond,” outlines the NDC’s plan to exploit issues like illegal mining, or galamsey, for political gain.
He said “A confidential document titled “Winning 2024 and Beyond”, prepared by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2021, was leaked into the public domain and came to our attention in December 2022″
“This document outlines the NDC’s strategy for the 2024 elections, and it is becoming increasingly evident that Organised Labour is following this politically motivated plan”, the stated noted.
Mustapha questioned Organised Labour’s sudden activism on galamsey, noting their silence on the matter despite significant government efforts over the past seven years to combat illegal mining.
He emphasized that the government’s initiatives, including stricter legislation and prosecutions, have been largely ignored by Organised Labour.
Mustapha stated “actions including passing legislation with stiffer punishments, prosecuting offenders including the famous galamsey queen, Aisha Huang, who committed crimes during Mahama’s administration and was never arrested using the military to seize and destroy property used for galamsey. Through all these efforts, Organised Labour was silent”.
Mustapha urged Ghanaians to reject any politicization of the fight against galamsey, framing it as a national issue that transcends party politics.
“We call on all well-meaning Ghanaians and members of the various unions under Organised Labour to reject any attempt to politicise the fight against galamsey”.
He called for unity in addressing illegal mining to protect the environment and communities across Ghana.
