Members of the Responsible Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana have announced plans for a demonstration on Friday, October 11, 2024, in response to Organized Labour’s call for a nationwide strike starting October 10.
The Association claims that Organized Labour’s stance against illegal mining threatens legitimate small-scale mining operations and is politically motivated.
“Galamsey is already banned in Ghana, and therefore, Organized Labour’s call to ban legitimate mining is just an attempt to frustrate the legalised small-scale mining business”
“We, therefore, find Organized Labour’s stance counterproductive and politically motivated, and an attempt to shut down our source of livelihood” a statement signed by Mark Conduah Secretary to the Association, informing the Inspector-General of Police about their intention to demonstrate.
They emphasize that small-scale mining is legal under Ghana’s Minerals and Mining Act 2006, and argue for a comprehensive approach to address the illegal mining issue rather than blanket bans.
The demonstration aims to advocate for constructive dialogue and solutions to the challenges posed by illegal mining.
