The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has addressed speculations about a perceived rivalry between the Manhyia Palace and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), firmly dispelling such claims during a visit by the party’s flagbearer former President John Dramani Mahama.
In his remarks, Otumfuo emphasized the Palace’s neutral and inclusive stance in its dealing with politicians and all manner of people.
“Your absence from Manhyia after leaving office sparked rumors of strained relations. While you were first elected as flagbearer before NPP apointed NAPO [Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh] as runing mate he visited, but you hadn’t. Your presence and speech today reaffirm that Manhyia is your home. I want everyone to know that Manhyia cannot be sidelined in any matter. Like a mother, I embrace everyone.”
Otumfuo urged all political actors to ensure peace as Ghana approaches the December 7 elections, highlighting the importance of respecting democratic processes:
“Ghana is bigger than all of us and must take precedence over everything. Our agreed four-year election terms are a form of accountability, allowing Ghanaians to express their satisfaction or otherwise. The time has come again.
“Use your campaigns to outline what you intend to do in power. By now, Ghanaians have heard you, and many have already decided. My prayer is for a peaceful election.”
Stressing the importance of order at polling stations, he added:
“The polling station is where the election happens. Agents will sign after counting, and there’s no need for conflict. If we adhere to the proper processes, no violence will occur, and God will determine the rightful leader. No one should attempt to win through rigging.”
Otumfuo after counseling the NDC ahead of the December 7th poll further offered his blessings to the NDC leadership while maintaining the sovereignty of divine will:
“You have my blessings, but I urge you to comprehensively advocate your policies. Ultimately, God will appoint His choice to lead. My prayers are with you, and I ask for God’s protection and prosperity in all your endeavors.”
