The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Health, Dr. Thomas Anabah, has commended the management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for what he described as exemplary administration, effective use of resources, and forward-looking development plans aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery.
Speaking to journalists during a working visit to health facilities in Kumasi, Dr. Anabah praised KATH for its high standards in hygiene, efficient use of internally generated funds (IGF), and commitment to expanding services.
The visit forms part of the committee’s oversight mandate to assess operations and challenges within the health sector nationwide.
“This is one of the few hospitals we’ve visited where hygiene is not a concern. The facility is well-managed, and there are impressive plans to introduce new services that will make it a one-stop shop for healthcare not just in Kumasi, but across the country,” Dr. Anabah stated.
He acknowledged that while challenges persist, including funding constraints and the need for new equipment, the committee is impressed with how KATH is navigating these issues. Dr. Anabah assured that Parliament would consider recommending support to facilitate access to credit and additional funding to improve infrastructure and service delivery.
“We believe with the right support, Komfo Anokye can significantly raise the bar for healthcare delivery in Ghana. They have the vision and leadership required to make this facility a model hospital,” he added.
The committee also visited Kumasi South Hospital and expressed similar satisfaction, but the spotlight remained on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital due to its strategic role as a referral center for the northern sector of the country.
Dr. Anabah said the committee will include its findings in a report to Parliament, with recommendations aimed at boosting funding, addressing equipment shortages, and reinforcing the hospital’s capacity to serve a growing patient population.
As Ghana’s health infrastructure faces ongoing scrutiny, the Parliamentary Health Committee’s recognition of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital underscores the importance of strategic management and resourcefulness.
With parliamentary backing, KATH could receive much-needed support to elevate its services and maintain its status as one of Ghana’s premier healthcare institutions.
