The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Aitey Okai, popularly known as “Aitey Powers,” over an alleged threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo.
The 46-year-old was arrested on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to have issued the threat.
According to a statement issued by the Accra Regional Police Command, Okai is currently in police custody and is assisting with investigations into the matter.
The police said the investigation is aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determining the appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The Command has also urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information about the case while investigations are ongoing.
The statement was signed by Ms. Juliana Obeng, Chief Superintendent of Police and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
