The Ghana Police Service has announced security measures in preparation for a planned demonstration by a group known as Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey.
The protest, scheduled to take place in Accra from 3rd to 5th October 2024, will involve a daily procession from Okponglo, near the University of Ghana, to the Independence Square.
In a statement released by the police, they confirmed receipt of the protest notice on 26th September 2024.
Following discussions with the organizers, the routes for the demonstration were agreed upon.
The procession will begin at Okponglo, proceed through Shiashie, Shangrila, and the Airport Traffic Light, before passing through notable landmarks like the National Service Secretariat, the Electoral Commission Office, Parliament House, and ending at the Accra Sports Stadium car park.
The police reminded the organizers of their responsibilities under the Public Order Act.
The organizers were informed that they would be held liable for any damage to public property during the protest.
The police also emphasized that participants are expected to follow police instructions to ensure the safety and smooth flow of pedestrians and vehicles.
The statement further outlined the police’s duties under the Public Order Act.
These include taking necessary steps to prevent traffic obstruction, dispersing crowds in the event of potential violence or a breach of the peace, and closing streets or erecting barriers as needed to maintain public order.
“The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that it has put in place sufficient security measures to maintain law and order and ensure peace and security during the demonstration and beyond,” the statement read.
The Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey demonstration is expected to draw attention to the ongoing issues surrounding illegal mining in the country. With the police’s security measures in place, the authorities aim to safeguard public safety while allowing citizens to exercise their right to peaceful protest.
