The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its readiness to maintain law and order during a nationwide demonstration planned by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
The protest, which will take place in all 16 regional capitals, is in response to the NDC’s concerns about alleged discrepancies in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) voter register.
During a press briefing on Monday, September 16, 2024, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Police Public Affairs, confirmed that the police are fully prepared to provide security throughout the event. She reiterated that the police will ensure safety and lawfulness as the NDC stages its protest.
The NDC plans to present petitions at the EC’s regional offices and its headquarters in Accra, as they continue to express frustration over perceived flaws in the voter register ahead of the upcoming general elections.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi also emphasized that the NDC has been reminded of its obligations under the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), which outlines the rules for organizing public demonstrations.
“We would like to once again give assurance that the police will ensure the maintenance of security, law, and order throughout the period of the exercise and beyond,” she said.
