The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) says the national power system experienced a major disturbance early Thursday following a fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants.
The company said the automatic tripping was part of the power system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The disturbance resulted in the loss of electricity supply to some parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working in coordination with other agencies within the power sector, immediately took steps to isolate the affected transmission line and began the safe and systematic restoration of the power system.
The company reported that power supply had already been restored to some affected areas as of Thursday morning, with restoration efforts continuing to reconnect remaining affected customers.
“GRIDCo regrets the inconvenience caused by this temporary outage,” the company said in a statement issued by its Corporate Communications Section.
It added that all relevant technical teams had been mobilised and were working urgently to achieve full restoration of power supply.
GRIDCo assured the public that it would continue to provide updates as further information becomes available and appealed for patience and cooperation while restoration works continue.
