President John Dramani Mahama has announced that new ministers will be appointed to head the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology following the deaths of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed in the August 3 helicopter crash.
The President made the remarks during a courtesy call by the Ghana Muslim Mission at the Jubilee House, where he addressed ongoing speculation surrounding possible replacements for the two ministerial positions.
He noted that although public discussions have intensified on social media, he is “not in a hurry” to make the appointments.
Background to the August 3 Helicopter Crash
The fatal incident occurred on August 3, when a military helicopter carrying senior government officials, including Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Muhammed, crashed during an official assignment.
The aircraft, operated by the Ghana Air Force, encountered technical difficulties mid-flight, leading to the tragic accident.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but all attempts to save the officials on board were unsuccessful.
The crash prompted national mourning and widespread tributes to the two ministers, both of whom were widely respected for their contributions to public service.
A government-led investigation was subsequently launched to determine the cause of the mechanical failure and to enhance safety procedures for state aircraft.
President Mahama assured the public that the appointment of new ministers will be handled carefully and thoughtfully, emphasizing that the priority remains ensuring stability and continuity in government operations.
He added that formal announcements regarding the new appointees will be made after the Christmas period.
