Ghana earned international commendation at the 135th Council Meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London after President John Dramani Mahama’s government donated humanitarian items valued at GH¢10 million to Sudan, Jamaica and Cuba.
Ghana’s GH¢10 million humanitarian support to conflict-torn Sudan and hurricane-ravaged Jamaica and Cuba received special recognition at the 135th Council Meeting of the International Maritime Organization (C 135) held in London on Wednesday.
The commendation followed a presentation by the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Naval Captain (rtd.) Kamal-Deen Ali, who described the donation as a symbol of Ghana’s deep sense of solidarity, respect and fraternity with victims in the affected countries.
According to him, the gesture reflects “the unique attribute that connects us as one people,” a remark that drew applause for President John Dramani Mahama from delegates at the meeting.
President Mahama recently oversaw the delivery of humanitarian items valued at GH¢10 million on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana. The donation is earmarked for distribution in the ratio of 50% to Jamaica, 30% to Cuba and 20% to Sudan.
The assistance package includes 2,400 bags of Ghana rice, 540 bags of sugar, 377 boxes of medication, 500 mattresses and 500 pillows, 100 cartons of gari mix, 50,000 pieces of T-shirts, three 20-foot containers of chocolate products, 20 units of 500-litre water tanks, 20 hand-wash stations, 10 emergency portable toilets and assorted clothing items.
In a related humanitarian announcement, President Mahama speaking at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park during the 80th anniversary celebration of the Manchester Declaration, also known as the Fifth Pan-African Congress revealed that Ghana will deploy personnel from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to Jamaica.
The team will include men and women with expertise in engineering, masonry and carpentry and will support reconstruction efforts in communities devastated by recent hurricanes. The President also appealed to African nations to extend urgent humanitarian aid to Jamaica, noting the extensive destruction caused by the powerful storms.
President Mahama’s actions and Ghana’s leadership in humanitarian solidarity continue to draw international appreciation, reinforcing the country’s longstanding commitment to global cooperation and assistance.
