The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appointed Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The appointment, which took effect on March 1, 2026, is for a four-year term.
According to a statement from the university, Professor Owusu-Dabo’s appointment recognises his distinguished career in public health research, academic leadership and medical training, as well as his longstanding contributions to advancing medical research in Ghana and internationally.
In his new role, Professor Owusu-Dabo is expected to provide strategic leadership and advisory support to the centre as it continues to promote cutting-edge research, innovation and capacity building in tropical medicine and related health sciences.
KCCR, based at KNUST in Kumasi, is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in infectious disease research, public health interventions and scientific training. The centre has made significant contributions to addressing tropical diseases affecting Ghana, Africa and the global community.
Professor Owusu-Dabo is a medical doctor, epidemiologist and Professor of Global Health at KNUST. He previously served as Pro Vice-Chancellor of KNUST from 2020 to 2024.
He has also held several key leadership positions at the university, including Dean of the School of Public Health and the first Director of KCCR.
Professor Owusu-Dabo holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from the University of Nottingham and has extensive experience in infectious disease research, global health and health systems strengthening. He has authored numerous scientific publications and maintains several international research collaborations.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s leading public health scholars, he has played a key role in strengthening biomedical research and scientific training across Africa.
Management of KNUST has congratulated Professor Owusu-Dabo on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to support the centre’s continued growth and impact.
