The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has ordered the immediate closure of a Kenkey mill located opposite Adehye Market.
The directive is due to severe public health violations and non-compliance with hygiene regulations after public social media campaign against unhygienic state of the place despite assistance of KMA’s Environmental health office.

The sleeping KMA environmental health officials acted after public pressure on Facebook exposing the mill’s unsanitary conditions.
The public anger against KMA and Food and Drugs Authority on social media for sleeping on their responsibilities for failing to enforce sanitation laws at the Kenkey mill prompted a joint assessment by Environmental Health Officers and officials from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on February 20, 2025.

The inspection confirmed that the facility was operating in violation of Section 52 of the Public Health Act and KMA Bye-laws.
KMA claim operators were initially instructed to cease operations, thoroughly clean the premises, and await further directives.
However, a follow-up inspection on February 21, 2025, revealed that the facility had failed to comply with these orders.
As a result, KMA issued an immediate closure notice, strictly prohibiting access to the mill until further notice.

KMA has warned that any attempt to resume operations without official clearance from its Environmental Health Department will result in legal action.
The Assembly also urged the public to remain vigilant about food safety and patronize only establishments that adhere to hygiene standards.

Signed by Metro Environmental Health Officer Kwaku Poku claim, the closure directive underscores the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring public health and food safety in Kumasi.
