Since Ghana’s qualification for the World Cup, many journalists have begun a noble campaign, urging the National Team coaches to look beyond the usual pool of players and give deserving talents the opportunity to shine on the global stage. In that same spirit, I wish to add my voice and draw attention to some exceptional footballers from the University for Development Studies (UDS) who, in my considered opinion, have earned a place in the conversation for national selection.
These are not just university players; they are disciplined athletes, gifted tacticians, and relentless competitors who have consistently distinguished themselves in national and international university competitions.
GOALKEEPERS
Emmanuel Edo: A commanding presence between the posts, Emmanuel combines sharp reflexes with remarkable composure under pressure. His ability to read the game, organize his defence, and make crucial saves in tight moments makes him a dependable last line of defence. He saved two penalties and accreditation one during the Semi-finals at the FISU World Cup.
Ibrahim B. Abdullah – Agile, confident, and fearless, Ibrahim possesses the rare ability to turn potential goals into breathtaking saves. His distribution is crisp, and his leadership from the back instills confidence in his teammates.
DEFENDERS
Hamza Abukari Chendiba: A rock-solid defender/ Midfielder, whose timing in tackles and aerial dominance make him a nightmare for opposing strikers. Calm on the ball, Hamza transitions play effortlessly from defence to attack.
Habilu Alhassan: Intelligent, disciplined, and technically gifted, Habilu reads the game with the precision of a seasoned professional. His versatility allows him to adapt seamlessly to any defensive setup.
Jonas Agyemontor Yeboah – Strong, composed, and tactically aware, Jonas is the kind of player every coach dreams of—a modern centre-back who combines physical strength with elegance in ball control. He never loses arial duels! Even as a central defender, he score a crucial goal against the Brazilian Team in the last group stage game.
Kwaku Akuoko Jorge – Quick and relentless, Kwaku excels in one-on-one duels and recovers swiftly after challenges. His overlapping runs and pinpoint crosses make him a true asset in both defence and attack.
Jorge Renchi: Fast and tireless, Kwaku dominates one-on-one situations and quickly regains control after tackles. His overlapping runs and accurate crosses make him a valuable force in both defence and attack.
Mohammed Ibrahim: The enforcer in defence, Mohammed brings a blend of toughness and tactical discipline. His anticipation and interception skills regularly break down opponents’ rhythm.
Mohammed Basit Malmanga: A dependable full-back with a tireless work rate. Malmanga’s positioning and ability to support attacking play make him invaluable on either flank.
MIDFIELDERS
Alhassan Zakaria – An engine of the team, Zakaria dictates play with vision and confidence. His ability to control tempo and distribute with precision makes him the heartbeat of any midfield. He score four goals at the World Cup.
Ibrahim Salifu: A creative force with an eye for goal. Salifu’s intelligent movement and passing range bring fluidity and unpredictability to the game.
Bassam Mohammed: A versatile midfielder who blends strength with finesse. Bassam breaks up opposition play effortlessly and transitions quickly into attack.
Choo Mohammed – Graceful yet powerful, Choo orchestrates the midfield with purpose. His ball retention and ability to deliver incisive passes are second to none.
Asigre Sulemana Mohammed (Captain): The inspirational leader of the UDS team. Sulemana’s discipline, vision, and ability to rally his teammates make him a true captain in every sense. A midfield general who leads by example. He is strong, skillful and intelligent with long range precise passes. Jersey scored the equalizer against the Brazilian Team.in the Final of the FISU World Cup.
FORWARDS
Abdul Ganiyu Musah – A natural finisher with an instinct for goal. Ganiyu combines pace, skill, and intelligence to dismantle even the toughest defences.
Augustine Frimpong – Electric on the wings, Frimpong dazzles with his dribbles and blistering speed. His creativity and flair make him a constant threat in the final third. He score a hatrick in the Quarter final game against the South Korean Team.
Fawzan Dandawa: A clinical striker with a sharp eye for positioning. Fawzan’s composure in front of goal and ability to exploit defensive lapses make him deadly in the box.
Ezedeen Alhassan: A dynamic forward who thrives on creating opportunities. Ezedeen’s footwork, vision, and tenacity make him a nightmare for defenders. He scored 3 goals at the FISU World Cup including the winning goal of the tournament, direct from a corner kick.
Alhassan Labandoo – Intelligent and technically sound, Labandoo combines precision with power. His versatility allows him to play across multiple attacking roles.
These players have proven their worth on numerous occasions, combining teamwork, tactical intelligence, and pure talent.
As Ghana prepares for another World Cup adventure, it would be fitting for the technical handlers of the Black Stars to cast their nets wider and consider these shining stars from UDS who are true ambassadors of Ghanaian university football and potential contributors to national glory.
