The Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), a mining contractor for AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, has commissioned a newly constructed footbridge at Pomposo in the Obuasi East Municipality.
The project comes as a huge relief to residents and schoolchildren who regularly use the road but have long struggled due to its poor state. The footbridge now provides a safe and convenient passage for pedestrians in the area.
This initiative reflects UMA’s growing commitment to corporate social responsibility. Beyond its mining operations, the company continues to contribute to community development.
Recently, UMA gained attention for championing safe menstruation campaigns by donating sanitary pads to schools in Obuasi.
The footbridge project further demonstrates its resolve to positively impact host communities.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Oscar Van Etten, Operations Manager of UMA, said the project responds to a pressing community need.
“This intervention underscores our unwavering commitment to community development. It ensures safe passage for residents and schoolchildren alike. As a company, we consider this project a product of unity and healthy partnerships forged with AngloGold Ashanti and our host communities.
This is not a one-off gesture—we remain dedicated to supporting more projects that improve lives,” he emphasized.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi East, William Kofi Adzowu, commended UMA for what he described as a timely intervention, noting that the old bridge had become a death trap.
He urged other private institutions in Obuasi to emulate UMA, stressing that government remains open to private sector participation in infrastructure development.
Nana Bosompim Kitikyi Appenteng, Kontihene of Dompoase, also praised the initiative, describing it as a “welcome relief” for community leaders who had been worried about the dangerous state of the old bridge.
He lauded UMA’s swift action as a clear demonstration of its commitment to community welfare.
