UTAG began a nationwide strike on October 10, 2024, demanding a ban on mining in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies due to the severe environmental impacts of illegal mining, known as galamsey.
UTAG called on the National Independent Elections Committee (NIEC) to facilitate the process by the close of Monday, 28th October 2024 to make an immediate decision on the suspension directive.
The union urged the government to speedy revocation of the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulation 2022 (L.I 2262) and called on the government to take the scope of it’s task force to include forest reserves in the fight against illegal mining.
The strike UTAG believe reflects it’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations.
The union however noted that discussions with various stakeholders regarding the signing of Pact underway.
“UTAG developed a Pact for Candidates of the 2024 Presidential Election, which aims to secure their commitment to fighting illegal mining activities. Discussions with various stakeholders regarding the signing of this pact have started”.
