Chaos erupted during the commissioning of DRIP machines in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region when a violent clash broke out between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The incident, which occurred in the presence of chiefs and other dignitaries, led to gunshots being fired, with one NPP member having his ear severed injured in the melee.
The commissioning ceremony, which included the participation of local chiefs and officials, was interrupted when a group of men wearing T-shirts bearing the image of Gomoa West Member of Parliament, Richard Gyan Mensah, stormed the event armed with machetes and other weapons.
According to eyewitnesses, the group fired shots into the air and began posting NDC posters on the newly commissioned DRIP machines, sparking a violent confrontation between NPP and NDC supporters.
The situation quickly escalated into chaos, with the chiefs present fleeing the scene for safety as the violence intensified. One NPP member suffered a severe injury, having his ear chopped off during the clash. Several police officers were also assaulted and required medical attention following the incident.
Speaking to the media, the District Chief Executive and NPP parliamentary candidate for Gomoa West, Bismarck Nkum, expressed deep disappointment in the police for failing to prevent the violence, despite the presence of dignitaries and traditional leaders.
“I am very disappointed in the police for allowing this unfortunate incident to occur in front of the chiefs and other leaders. I call on the police to arrest those responsible for this attack and ensure justice is served,” the DCE stated.
Despite the severity of the incident, no arrests have been made as of yet. The District Chief Executive has appealed to the authorities to take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent future incidents of political violence in the area.
The incident has raised concerns about political tensions in the region as the country heads toward the 2024 general elections.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the investigation and potential arrests.
