The former Member of Parliament for the Assin Central Constituency in the Central Region, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has confessed contributing to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a private meeting with NPP-affiliated lawyers in Kumasi on Saturday, 29th March, the presidential hopeful expressed disappointment over the party’s significant loss.
“It is unfortunate that the party lost the 2024 elections by such a huge margin. We are all guilty. This is not the time for a blame game; rather, we must come together and work towards bringing the party back into power in the next general election,” he encouraged the lawyers.
Acknowledging Mistakes and Lessons Learned
Agyapong admitted that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second term in office was a disaster, as the government failed to listen to advice. He asserted that the President cannot escape blame for the party’s loss.
“We lost the election because we made a lot of mistakes while in office. Power got into our heads, including the President, and we stopped listening to the grassroots. Even when making unpopular decisions, we ignored the consequences,” he stated.
He further admitted, “I am equally guilty of the party’s defeat. In the lead-up to the party’s Presidential Primaries, when the system was skewed against me, I made certain statements on some platforms that I should not have made. I regret that—that is a fact. I had is Issues with certain powers in the country I think all those things didn’t help because a point they thought the governing party was against them and so some of them incited their followers against us”.
He added” Vice President also silence on the Northern Conflicts also didn’t help us as a party”.
Commitment to a Clean Campaign
Kennedy Agyapong assured the party lawyers of his commitment to conducting a clean campaign in the future if given the opportunity.
He also urged his supporters, particularly the party-affiliated lawyers, to maintain a fair and respectful campaign when he contests for the NPP’s presidential candidacy. He cautioned them against creating campaign messages that could later be used against the party by its opponents.
Potential Presidential Contenders
Although the NPP has yet to officially open nominations for the party’s presidential primaries, it is becoming increasingly evident that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is laying the groundwork for a possible comeback.
Currently, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the defeated 2024 NPP presidential candidate and Kennedy Agyapong are the most visible figures re-organizing their base ahead of the official nomination period.
