The Western Regional Police Command has carried out a major operation against illegal mining activities in Avelebo and Akango, both located in the Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira District.

During the raid, authorities seized 10 excavators and arrested 15 individuals, including seven foreign nationals and eight Ghanaian miners, for engaging in unauthorized mining operations.

The illegal miners are accused of encroaching on the Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira enclave, engaging in unregulated mining, and polluting the Ankobra River, a vital water source for surrounding communities.

Authorities have confirmed that the seized excavators and other mining equipment will be used as evidence in court as part of efforts to prosecute the offenders.

The operation forms part of ongoing measures to clamp down on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to pose a significant threat to the environment and water bodies in the region.
