Former Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, George Obeng Takyi, has made a striking revelation about the internal dynamics of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming that financial muscle plays a pivotal role in determining one’s influence and relevance within the party.
Speaking in an interview on Kumasi based Pure FM morning party political talk show, host by Kwame Adinkrah, monitored by www.kumasimail.com the former lawmaker lamented the monetization of politics in the ruling party, emphasizing that without substantial financial backing, even the most competent and dedicated members struggle to make an impact.
“In the NPP today, if you don’t have money, you are practically irrelevant. It’s not just about competence, vision, or service to the people anymore—money speaks louder than ideas,” Hon. Obeng Takyi asserted.
He pointed out that the growing influence of money in politics is eroding the core values of the party, sidelining grassroots members who lack the financial resources to compete effectively.
“We are gradually losing the essence of true leadership. The people who can bring real change are often left behind because they cannot afford to finance expensive campaigns, mobilization, and party activities,” he added.
Political analysts have long argued that the influx of money into party politics breeds corruption, as elected officials often seek to recoup their investments through questionable means once in power.
Many believe that this trend is weakening internal democracy and making party positions accessible only to those with deep pockets.
Mr. Obeng Takyi has called for urgent reforms to restore meritocracy in the NPP and Ghanaian politics at large. He stressed the need for measures that prioritize service, integrity, and grassroots engagement over financial influence.
“If we do not address this issue, we risk creating a political system where only the rich have a voice, and the ordinary Ghanaian is left with no real representation,” he warned.
