King of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II would embark on a historic royal visit to his counterpart the Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I, King of Gonjaland.
This follows the historic visit by His Royal Majesty the Yagbonwura last June to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
The reciprocal visit by the Yaa-Naa this coming Sunday February 16, 2025 is very significant in many ways to both traditional rulers and their respective kingdoms and their subjects.
“First, it will bring unity between the two kingdoms. Secondly, it will also help enhance the development in the two kingdoms because at least the two kings can have the opportunity to deliberate on key issues which can be laid beore the President for implementation. Thirdly, it will be an advantage for the youth to also collaborate to enhance peace, unity and development.”
Chief Yakubu Musah, Public Relations Officer to the Gbewaa Palace said in an interview with www.kumasimail.com Northern Regional Editor Joseph Ziem on Thursday.
According to Chief Musah, Naa Abukari’s decision to visit the Yagbonwura was also to “acknowledge” his first visit to Dagbon in June 2024. “This will enhance peace, unity and development between the two kingdoms and once this continuous, we are hopeful that it will have an influence on the entire country and go a long way to defuse conflicts that exists among various tribes”.
An estimated 200 paramount chiefs as well as hundreds of sons and daughters of Dagbon including drummers, horse riders and warriors would be accompanying Naa Abukari II to the Jakpa Palace in Damongo on Sunday.
Chief Musah said the journey would begin at the Northern Region House of Chiefs with the Yaa-Naa leading his chiefs and the rest of the entourage in a journey that spans over 100km. He gave the assurance that there would be state security presence throughout the journey to and from the Savannah Region.
The Dagomba people of Dagbon and Gonja people of Yagbon have been neighbours for centuries. However, no king from either side has ever paid a visit to the other until recent times.
