Mustapha Ayarga Tchede has been elected chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region after securing 1,131 votes in the party’s constituency elections held over the weekend.
Ayarga’s victory saw him defeat incumbent chairman Faisal Dauda, who polled 525 votes, while Alhaji Mutum garnered 176 votes.
The outcome marks a significant change in the constituency’s leadership, with Ayarga, who previously served as the first vice chairman, set to lead the party’s constituency-level administration.
His victory had been anticipated by some observers, who pointed to his close association with the Member of Parliament for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, at various social and political events.
Dauda, who secured 525 votes, had served only one term as constituency chairman. His tenure was reportedly characterised by strained relations with the constituency’s Member of Parliament, a situation that contributed to tensions within the local party structure.
The election of Ayarga is therefore expected to reshape the relationship between the constituency executives and the MP, potentially creating room for improved cooperation and coordination within the party.
Ayarga’s emergence, alongside the election of other regional party executives, is also expected to influence the NDC’s preparations for the 2028 general elections.
Party supporters and observers will be watching to see how the new leadership manages internal differences, strengthens grassroots structures and mobilises members ahead of the next electoral contest.
The new chairman is expected to work with party stakeholders in the constituency to consolidate support, promote unity and advance the party’s objectives.
Ayarga’s victory could signal a new chapter for the NDC in Asawase, although the extent to which the new leadership can unite competing interests and build a cohesive campaign structure will become clearer in the months ahead.
