Paul Kwabena Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described the arrest of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, as unfair and avoidable.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Tuesday, July 1, Mr. Yandoh argued that the situation could have been handled more respectfully, given Mr. Jumah’s status as a former head of the state-owned company.
“I think the whole incident is unfortunate because the man was the former MD and with that regards, he needed to be accorded with respect. Even if he had some vehicles with him, there should be a cordial way of dealing with it. The current MD can call him and deal with him politely, rather than resorting to the police to come and arrest him in that manner, it actually unfair. OI feel he’s been treated unfairly,” Mr. Yandoh stated.
Maxwell Kofi Jumah was granted bail of GHS 500,000 with two sureties on Monday, June 30, following his arrest over the alleged unlawful retention of state-owned vehicles belonging to GIHOC Distilleries.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that three state-owned vehicles were retrieved from Mr. Jumah as part of ongoing investigations into suspected financial impropriety and asset misappropriation during his time as Managing Director.
According to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Jumah’s arrest followed a formal petition from GIHOC management, alleging that he failed to return company vehicles after leaving office.
He was arrested on Sunday, June 29, at a private residence in Kumasi, where he was reportedly celebrating his birthday. He was initially detained at the Ashanti Regional Police Command before being transferred to the CID headquarters in Accra for further interrogation.
DCOP Donkor confirmed that while three vehicles have been retrieved, investigations are ongoing to trace other assets and determine the full extent of the alleged misconduct. Further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
