A Kumasi High Court has fined Yaw Amoah Gyamih, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Council of Elders in the Bosome Freho constituency in the Ashanti region, GH₵10,000 for making unsubstantiated allegations against Kwame Asafo-Agyei Ayeh, the party’s parliamentary candidate for elections 2024.
Chairman Gyamih had challenged Asafo-Agyei Ayeh’s eligibility to contest in the December 2024 general election, but the court dismissed the claims and awarded the amount to the defendant.
Asafo-Agyei Ayeh’s lawyer, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, hailed the court’s decision as a “victory for justice” and a “clear indication” that his client’s candidacy is legitimate.
The development has sparked confusion among party supporters and constituents, who are eagerly awaiting clarification on the matter.
The court’s decision is seen as a significant blow to Gyamih, who had claimed that Asafo-Agyei Ayeh did not meet the party’s eligibility criteria.
The NPP is yet to comment on the matter, but sources close to the party indicate that the leadership is working to resolve the issue and avoid further divisions within the party.
