NPP Shakeup Alert: Paul Afoko eyes NPP National Chairmanship
Share on WhatsApp

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has announced his intention to contest the party’s National Chairmanship in the forthcoming election cycle.

Afoko’s declaration signals a comeback bid aimed at revitalizing the party with renewed integrity and purposeful leadership.

In a statement titled “Declaration of Intention to Contest the National Chairmanship Position of the New Patriotic Party,” Mr. Afoko revealed that the decision to run again is inspired by encouragement from numerous dedicated party members and stakeholders.

He emphasized his deep commitment to steering the NPP back to its founding values and democratic ideals.

“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I am honoured to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming election of national officers,” Afoko stated.

He highlighted that the decision was made after careful contemplation and in response to persistent calls for refreshed leadership.

Afoko assured that his focus would remain on uniting the party and strengthening its ability to fulfill promises made to Ghanaians.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our Party,” the statement read.

Afoko acknowledged the challenges faced over the years but expressed his dedication to prioritizing the party’s unity and future growth.

“My commitment to the NPP has remained steadfast through the years, and I believe the time has come to contribute, once again, to the rebuilding and strengthening of our Party at this critical juncture,” he said.

He pledged to engage actively with NPP members and the media in the coming weeks to outline his vision and strategic plans.

“I will engage more broadly with Party faithful and the media to share my vision, ideas, and plans to lead the NPP with integrity, transparency, anda renewed sense of purpose,” he firmly assured.

He concluded with a call for collective progress: “Let us look ahead together. God bless the NPP. God bless our dear country.”

A Brief Background on Paul Afoko

Born on August 31, 1954, Awentami Paul Afoko is a notable Ghanaian politician and businessman from the Upper East Region.

He made history in 2014 as the first northerner to lead the NPP as its National Chairman, focusing on grassroots development and financial reforms within the party.

However, his tenure was marred by internal conflicts that culminated in his indefinite suspension in 2015 by the party’s disciplinary committee.

Following his suspension, Afoko legally challenged the party’s decision, claiming it violated the NPP constitution.

In December 2015, he took the matter to the High Court, but the Human Rights Division ruled against him, upholding the suspension as fair and lawful.
