Private Legal Practitioner Martin Kpebu has been released after several hours of detention by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Mr. Kpebu was detained on December 3 for allegedly obstructing an officer of the Special Prosecutor.
Speaking to TV3 after his release, he described his detention as unnecessary.
“I know I have not done anything wrong, so I will be released,” he said.
He confirmed an altercation with a military officer at the OSP premises, recalling that “the military officer said I am stupid, and I also said he is stupid. So we exchanged words.”
Mr. Kpebu linked his arrest to perceived incompetence at the OSP, saying, “my arrest is a confirmation that Kissi Agyebeng is incompetent.”
He also announced plans to petition President Mahama for the removal of Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, citing 15 allegations against him.
The detention followed reports that Mr. Kpebu was held at an undisclosed location by OSP officials.
His lawyer, Mr. Marcellinus Biah, provided a detailed account of events to TV3’s News360.
According to Mr. Biah, the legal team attended an OSP invitation for investigations. While there, Mr. Kpebu gave an interview outside the OSP premises, which reportedly upset a police officer stationed at the gate. “Martin told him there was nothing wrong with granting an interview and subsequently attending to the inquiry,” Mr. Biah said, describing a verbal exchange between them.
Mr. Biah added that Mr. Kpebu requested to file a complaint against the officer involved, but the complaint center was unavailable.
He therefore presented his complaint to the inquiry committee and insisted the matter be addressed before proceeding with the main inquiry.
During the session, the committee informed Mr. Kpebu that he was to be charged with obstructing an officer of the Special Prosecutor.
The officers later arrested him, stating investigation showed Mr. Kpebu was at fault.
He was briefly granted bail after presenting one surety but was then taken away by officials. As of the lawyer’s statement, Mr. Kpebu’s location was unknown.
