The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the government of hypocrisy over delays in the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, as debate over the controversial legislation intensifies.
At a press conference held at the party’s headquarters, Assin South Member of Parliament, John Ntim Fordjour, criticized President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as “double standards” in handling the bill.
According to him, the government’s current posture on the legislation sharply contrasts with its earlier position while in opposition. He argued that the administration had previously championed the bill but now appears to have relegated it to a lower priority.
“Advocating aggressively for a policy in opposition only to dismiss it as a low priority once in government is the height of hypocrisy and deception,” he said.
Mr. Fordjour further alleged that the president has adopted inconsistent positions on the matter, both locally and internationally, describing it as a “dangerous double game.” He referenced concerns reportedly raised by advocacy groups, suggesting that the government’s approach lacks clarity and commitment.
The NPP maintains that the bill reflects the cultural, religious, and moral values of many Ghanaians and should be treated as a matter of national importance. The party warned that it will continue to mount pressure on the government until decisive action is taken to pass the legislation.
Mr. Fordjour also recalled the bill’s introduction in 2021 as a private member’s bill, noting that it received broad political and public support at the time, including backing from members of the then-opposition.
The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has remained one of the most debated pieces of legislation in Ghana, drawing strong opinions from political actors, civil society groups, and the international community.
