The Emergency Medicine Society Ghana (EMSOG) has strongly criticized the suspension of the Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), describing the decision as troubling and contrary to principles of patient safety and responsible healthcare leadership.
In a statement issued on May 6, 2026, EMSOG expressed concern over the CEO’s suspension following his public announcement that the hospital had temporarily suspended emergency admissions due to operational challenges.
According to the society, the CEO’s actions were consistent with established best practices in patient safety, risk communication, and healthcare management. EMSOG argued that healthcare leaders have a professional obligation to communicate openly when facilities are unable to safely accommodate additional emergency cases.
“Transparency is not misconduct; it is a professional obligation,” the statement emphasized.
The society warned that sanctioning health administrators for disclosing operational realities could have serious consequences for Ghana’s healthcare system. It said such actions risk creating an environment where clinicians and administrators may become reluctant to speak openly about threats to patient safety for fear of reprisals.
EMSOG reaffirmed its support for healthcare leaders who act in good faith to protect patients and uphold standards of care.
The organization called on the relevant authorities to immediately reconsider the suspension and undertake a fair and transparent review of the circumstances surrounding the announcement.
The society also cautioned that any actions perceived as intimidation of health professionals and health sector leaders would face strong opposition from emergency care practitioners across the country.
“Patient safety must never become a casualty of administrative or political expediency,” the statement said.
The statement was jointly signed by EMSOG President Dr. Daniel Osei-Kwame and General Secretary Mr. Emmanuel Acheampong.
