The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has announced significant progress toward the establishment of a Medical School at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), a move expected to boost medical education and healthcare delivery in the region.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College on Thursday, June 4, the Minister also revealed plans to upgrade the War Memorial Hospital and the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital into teaching hospitals.
The three initiatives, he said, will create a strong foundation for medical training, research, specialist healthcare delivery, and professional development in the Upper East Region.
“Of particular significance is the steady progress being made towards the establishment of a Medical School at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences. Complementing this effort are plans to upgrade the War Memorial Hospital and the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital into teaching hospitals,” he stated.
Hon. Atanga explained that the interventions form part of a broader national strategy to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system while creating opportunities for the next generation of health professionals.
According to him, government remains committed to investing in health education, infrastructure, and workforce development to build the skilled manpower required to drive the country’s socio-economic transformation.
He further highlighted ongoing healthcare initiatives, including the expansion of primary healthcare services, the construction of clinics, the establishment of emergency response centres, maternal and child health facilities, and occupational health units.
Turning his attention to the newly admitted students, the Minister urged them to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to academic excellence throughout their training.
He described nursing and midwifery as noble professions rooted in service, compassion, integrity, and sacrifice, stressing that the quality of healthcare delivery in Ghana depends heavily on the competence and dedication of healthcare workers.
The matriculation ceremony marked the official admission of a new cohort of students into the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College.
