Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has assured residents affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Police Barracks opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in Accra Central that government will provide immediate support and assistance as recovery efforts continue.

The minister gave the assurance during a visit to the scene of the devastating fire on Thursday, accompanied by the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief Fire Officer. The blaze displaced several families and destroyed property.

According to Mr. Muntaka, the visit was intended to assess the extent of the damage, engage with affected residents and communicate government’s plans to support them during the recovery process.
He said arrangements were being made to secure temporary accommodation for displaced families while plans for the reconstruction of the barracks are finalized.

In addition, he disclosed that victims would receive cash assistance, clothing and other relief items through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Mr. Muntaka commended the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Management Board and personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift and coordinated response, which helped contain the incident and ensure the safety of residents.
“The government will continue to work closely with the relevant agencies to implement measures that will help prevent such occurrences in the future,” he said.
As part of the visit, the Interior Minister also called on a police officer who sustained injuries during the fire and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

He expressed sympathy and solidarity with the injured officer, praised the medical team for their prompt and professional care, and assured the officer of government’s full support throughout his recovery.
Mr. Muntaka reiterated government’s commitment to assisting all affected families as rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts progress.
“Our thoughts remain with all affected families, and we will continue to provide the necessary assistance as recovery and rebuilding efforts advance,” he stated.
