Ashanti NPP Nasara wing demands retraction of Owusu Bempah’s allegation

The Nasara Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has condemned what it describes as “divisive and inflammatory” remarks by Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah, alleging that the cleric has falsely claimed that some leading members of the party planned to use members of the wing to attack his church.

In a press statement signed by the Ashanti Regional Nasara Coordinator, Razak Abubakar, the group said the allegation was false and damaging to the reputation of the wing, which it said was established to mobilise support among settler and migrant communities across the country.

The Nasara Wing said it was particularly concerned that the allegation had come from a religious leader, arguing that such remarks risked creating divisions along religious and tribal lines.

“It is appalling that such a statement should come from a man who parades himself as a Man of God, yet appears determined to sow division and hatred rather than peace and understanding,” the statement said.

The group accused Prophet Owusu Bempah of seeking to deepen divisions in society and said his alleged conduct was inconsistent with the values of tolerance, unity and national cohesion.

It further rejected any suggestion that the Nasara Wing could be used to attack a place of worship, describing such an allegation as a “slur” on its leadership and members.

According to the statement, the Nasara Wing represents “unity in diversity” and seeks to integrate settler communities into Ghana’s mainstream political life irrespective of ethnicity or religion.

The group also clarified that the Nasara Wing should not be regarded as exclusively Muslim, stressing that it comprises members of settler communities who may belong to different religious backgrounds, including Christianity.

The Nasara Wing has demanded that Prophet Owusu Bempah retract the allegation and issue an unqualified apology to the wing and the NPP within what it described as a reasonable period.

It warned that failure to comply would compel the group to consider “all legitimate options” available to protect its image and the integrity of its leadership.

The statement also said the alleged remarks would not affect the political ambitions of the party, asserting that “well-meaning Ghanaians” would continue to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The group further appealed to the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Ghana Evangelical and Charismatic Churches and other ecumenical bodies to speak out against what it described as a pattern of conduct and call Prophet Owusu Bempah to order.

“The pulpit must not be turned into a platform for tribal and religious bigotry,” the statement said, urging religious institutions not to remain silent on the matter.
