Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central has said that Ghanaians bear responsibility for the recurrent floods that have devastated parts of the country, including the capital, Accra.

Posting on his official X account, the former MP described the scale of the disaster and attributed it to human actions rather than natural forces.
“Ghana has been flooding since before independence,” he wrote, adding figures that he said reflected the toll: “3,000 dead. 700,000 displaced. $1 billion lost.”
He went on to single out blocked gutters, construction on waterways and ignored warnings as primary causes.
“Not from hurricanes. Not from tsunamis. From gutters we blocked ourselves. From waterways we built on. From warnings we ignored. The rain didn’t fail us. We failed ourselves,” his post said.
The comments come amid renewed public concern after recent floods in Accra that claimed lives and caused extensive damage to property and businesses.
Authorities have repeatedly warned about the risks of building on natural drainage channels and the need for regular maintenance of drains, but enforcement and public compliance remain challenges.
Residents affected by recent floods have called for faster relief distribution and stronger preventive measures to reduce future loss of life and property.
