In a surprising political shift, Alhaji Muntari Alhassan, a known member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Cadres front in the Kwabere East Constituency in the Ashanti region along with his entire executive team, has defected to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The high-profile defection, which includes Alhaji Muntari’s family, marks a significant blow to the NDC in the constituency.
The former NDC stalwarts have not only cut all ties with the party they have served for years but are also encouraging their supporters to follow suit, citing concerns about the future of their children.
Alhaji Muntari and his executives revealed that their decision to switch allegiance began in 2017 when the NPP government introduced the Free Senior High School policy, a key campaign promise. While initially skeptical, they have since become convinced of the government’s commitment to pro-poor policies, which they believe are genuinely aimed at improving the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
To demonstrate their loyalty to their new party, Alhaji Muntari and his team have pledged to actively campaign for the NPP’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Bawumia, in the upcoming elections.
The defection was officially announced at Ntonso Zongo during a grassroots campaign event led by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in the Kwabre East constituency on Friday.
This development has sent shockwaves through the NDC’s base in the Ashanti Region, causing significant internal strife and raising concerns about potential divisions within the party as it heads into the next election cycle.
