Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has called for the release of his constituent, Salomey Awiti Bafoh, following her arrest and subsequent remand by the Adentan Circuit Court.
The MP said the circumstances surrounding the 40-year-old senior nursing officer’s arrest and detention were troubling, particularly what he described as changing explanations given to her family before she was eventually charged before the court.
In a statement, Mr. Korsah described the arrest as “most surprising and disheartening” and questioned the basis for Ms. Bafoh’s continued detention.
“Even more troubling is the fact that the reason for her arrest as told the family by the State Intelligence Agencies, kept changing until what she was finally charged with in court yesterday,” he said.
Ms. Bafoh, a mother of three and a nursing officer based in Techiman, was arrested at her home in Hansua, near Techiman, on September 13, 2026.
Reports at the time indicated that individuals who identified themselves as security operatives took her from the house and transported her to Accra. Her lawyers subsequently raised concerns about her whereabouts and the circumstances of her detention.
Police account
The police have since provided an account of the case, linking Ms. Bafoh to investigations into the activities of a TikTok account operated under the name “Ghana Jollof.”
According to the Criminal Investigation Department, the account is associated with Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, a UK-based TikToker whom investigators accuse of publishing and circulating false and inciteful content.
The police allege that Ms. Bafoh acted as a liaison for Ms. Kodua and helped recruit people to redistribute videos produced by her across various social media platforms. The police have also alleged that some of the material under investigation contained information capable of causing fear, alarm or violence. These are allegations and have not been established by the court.
At an Adentan Circuit Court hearing, Ms. Bafoh pleaded not guilty to a charge of abetment of crime, specifically relating to the alleged publication of false news.
The court denied her bail application and remanded her into police custody. She is expected to reappear on September 30, 2026.
Her lawyers have since filed a fresh bail application at the High Court, challenging her continued detention pending trial.
MP raises free-expression concerns
Against this background, Mr. Korsah said the case risked creating fear among citizens who seek to exercise their constitutional rights to free speech and expression.
“This action adds to the many instances of what appears to be worrying efforts at cowing citizens into fear in the exercise of their democratic rights to free speech and expression,” he said.
The MP also drew attention to the effect of Ms. Bafoh’s detention on her family, particularly her young children.
“It is both regrettable and condemnable, how a mother could be removed and kept in custody, away from her young children in the fashion being witnessed,” he said.
Mr. Korsah therefore appealed to the state to release Ms. Bafoh and allow her to return to her family.
“I call on the state for the release of Salomey Bafoh Awiti to join her already traumatized family,” he stated.
The MP ended his statement by calling for divine protection for Ghana and urging the country to resist what he described as oppressive rule.
The case remains before the courts, with Ms. Bafoh having pleaded not guilty to the charge against her.
